USA Today named Girl on the Train author Paula Hawkins as their "author of the year." They write: "Before 2015, no one had heard of Hawkins, 43, who previously wrote chick lit under the pseudonym Amy Silver. Then Train hurtled into bookstores on Jan. 13 and immediately clicked with readers desperate for the next Gone Girl." Riverhead has sold over 4 million units in the US.

But it wasn't one of their reviewers top books; On Wednesday, USA Today added their top 10 books of the year. It only results in minor positional changes on our aggregated and now completely final and updated list of the Absolutely Best of the Best Books of 2015.

Meanwhile, the listmakers have moved on to previews of 2016, which are mostly aggregations of forthcoming titles from well-known fiction writers. Among the latest are pieces from the NYT, the Washington Post, and EW.

On Queen Elizabeth's annual New Year's honors list, literary agent Ed Victor was named a CBE (Commander of the British Empire), for "services to literature."

The Costco Pennie's Pick for January is Ruth Wariner's memoir, The Sound of Gravel (already an Indie Next selection as well). And the Target Book Club pick for the month is Island Of A Thousand Mirrors by Nayomi Munaweera.

Holidays always feel like a sprint to me. Perhaps because I spent a lot of time working in restaurant kitchens, holidays don’t feel so much as celebratory, as they do an extra dose of work. I’m used to it and know that the key is advanced planning. I don’t cook much in advance, nor do I freeze things (except ice cream), but I make sure I’ve done all the shopping and preparation of any components as far ahead as possible, without flipping myself out too much.Mint pesto recipe
In Paris, that means making sure you have shallots to make mignonette sauce for oysters and a few days before, have a leg of lamb resting in the refrigerator studded with garlic and perhaps rosemary or thyme, waiting to be roasted off. But it also means fielding desperate S.O.S. messages from friends and visitors to Paris, trying to find a restaurant that’s open.

Just two sleeps to go...

Just two sleeps to go...If it's your job to carve the ham you might like to try my easy method. It will save you from hacking it to pieces in frustration, and ensure you serve up nice looking slices for the majority of diners. The best knife to use is one with a long very thin blade. Ham slicing knives have a rounded end. These knives are generally inexpensive and last a lifetime as they only get used once a year, but a good thin bladed meat carving knife will do the job just as well. 

Crunchy roast potatoes can be hard to achieve on Christmas day as the oven is being used for other dishes. I love this quick method here. It only takes 30 minutes in the oven to turn the crushed potatoes nice and golden. Finally, one last important point, the whole country will be having their ovens blasting on high from about 10.00am until 5.00pm. Do not expect your oven to operate on full grunt. It'll take a little longer than normal to cook everything as power is reduced a little. Open the oven door only when you need to, and close it immediately you have finished to conserve heat. Calm down, chill out, all of that (or pour another glass of bubbly) 'cos you will get there in the end!).

With just a few days left to plan, shop and cook for Christmas I thought I had better get this newsletter out early if it is to be of any help. I've included fantastic tips for getting perfect crunchy crackling on roast pork. Start with the butcher! DO NOT buy pork with the skin slashed through to the meat. Read why! Also, a recipe for my decadent chocolate cherry mince pies. Man, they're so good! And a great side dish of buttery new potatoes and asparagus which goes with everything.
I'll flick out another newsletter tomorrow with great tips for carving ham, another side dish and some gorgeous little nibbles to serve with bubbles.

Not long after I’d arrived in Paris, I met Jacques Genin. At the time, he was working out of a small workshop deep in the 15th arrondissement. Inside, he and his team of five or so worked in a very tight space: A large table where they worked sat in the center of the room, taking up probably 90% of the space, enrobing machines churned shiny melted chocolate off to the sides, steaming cauldrons of butter and sugar bubbled madly together, and the workers slid around the narrow passage between the two, pouring, cutting, dipping, and packing up chocolates and caramels.
The chocolates and caramels were only available wholesale to hotels and restaurants that knew the unique quality of Monsieur Genin’s work. The door of the workshop was made of battered wood, fitted with one-way glass so if you were standing on the sidewalk, you couldn’t see in, but he could see out. If he was in the mood, he’d let you in to buy chocolates. But you had to buy a kilo (2.2 pounds) and you couldn’t stand there and decide “I want two of those, one of those, six of these…” You were lucky if he opened the door at all, and even luckier if you had a kilo of his coveted chocolates in your possession. You took whatever he gave you, gladly.

Pretzel Bites RecipeBakers and pastry chefs crave two things: Salt and vinegar. When I worked in the restaurant business and got home way after midnight, too-often I’d park myself in front of the television, put my dogs up, and dig into a bag of tortilla chips along with a big jar of spicy salsa. Of course, I was half the age I am now and a bag of chips is no longer something I can, or should, polish off by myself – or call a meal. Someone I knew worked for one of those national diet centers and on day #1, he would put a bag of potato chips into a food processor, run it for a few minutes, then show everyone the oily sludge.

Even so, I still eat potato chips on occasion and run into trouble stopping myself from picking my way through a basket of tortilla chips, especially when there’s guacamole alongside. And I will buy those slender pretzel sticks, called sticks d’Alsace in France, to go along with other apĂ©ritif hour snacks in Paris.
